Rock guru Dave Fanning declared the opening night gig a roaring success.

And he was confident that for fans seeing U2 at a trio of dates in Croke Park this month, it would be money well spent.

"It was perfect, you couldn't ask for more. It was just fantastic," he told the Herald.

"I thought they were pretty good and so relaxed. I've seen them so many times over the years now. They were so good on Zoo TV, not so good on Pop Mart, but this was an amazing show."

Interesting

The RTE broadcaster reckoned that opening with four songs from new album No Line on the Horizon paid dividends.

"Normally, you wouldn't play so many new songs at the very start, especially as they have so many hits to choose from over the years, so it was an interesting choice but it worked really well. The crowd loved them," he said. "I would have happily sat and listened to them for another hour."
