U2 & Arcade Fire do Joy Division

Montreal in 2005, U2 and then-opening act Arcade Fire, perform Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart".

Here is the link to "Control", the Anton Corbijn movie about Ian Curtis's life and death. It's a very powerful movie, and you don't have to be a Joy Division fan to appreciate it. One of U2's early influences, you can hear, within the music, what inspired four Irish boys from the north side of Dublin to make music together.

Bono is NOT in Florida...or is he?

From The Examiner:

Bono sighting in Central Florida
March 30, 3:04 PM

 - They say you can’t believe everything you see. Chances are if you attended the Arnold Palmer InvitationalU2 may have experienced a Bono sighting. Well, not really Bono, but actually professional impersonator Pavel Sfera from California. A few years ago I met Pavel at the Reel Awards in Las Vegas, and later had the chance to work with him in the film Bamboo Shark. Sfera is originally from Yugoslavia, and has a very interesting background and family history which he is currently writing about.

Besides his striking resemblance, Pavel, like Bono also works as an activist and humanitarian. He has said “Even a small contribution can make a difference in the global fight with poverty, hunger, war and injustice. I know how music can be a powerful force in eliminating world problems as every bit of work helps in ways seen and unseen. I spent time in Romania working with handicapped orphans as a music therapist, and saw the dramatic changes from the children who were bed redden all their lives, literally learning to walk, and even dance to my guitar playing.”

The recent trip to Orlando by Sfera was for a performance at Hard Rock Café Universal. The event which was private was produced by Trina Day of Peyton and Day Entertainment. Sfera performed his live Bono Tribute then afterwards he mixed and mingled with the crowd.

After the event Sfera, and Glenn Reichle friend and fellow James Bond double, went out on the town. The sight of the two of them together gave a thrill to partygoers at Blue martini, Bar BQ, and Beluga clubs. One thing led to another, and by Sunday Pavel found himself invited to the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill.

Said Sfera , “My hosts at Bay Hill took me around the golf course. We talked a lot about Bono and his charitable works all over, of which I'm more than familiar, and able to share the same kind of passion for charity and justice.

The few at Bay Hill that knew that I was not Bono, often had friends at the tournament come by to take photos, just to have their friends get a jolt of "What the heck is Bono doing at a golf tournament?" A few VIPs and even a few Board Executives were in on the fun. Mostly nice people wanting to play a little prank with photos etc. I signed a few programs...not as Bono, but usually leave a one line note like "Love every day", or "All about Jesus". Never with a signature. Most of the time I kept to myself to actually watch the game. Saw Tiger win, while I was in the Skybox per invitation. I had a couple of local friends with me...so I was a little safe from the crowd. But as a few of us walked around...especially the girls, they love to see the expressions on their friends' faces as we passed them. One of the girls actually put her arm around me as we passed one of her former boyfriends.”

Stories like this prove you never know who you might run into in Central Florida.

U2 to play at U.V.A's Scott Stadium

From the Richmond Times-Dispatch:

By Melissa Ruggieri

Published: March 30, 2009

The Rolling Stones and Dave Matthews Band have been there – and now U2 will truck a massive, in-the-round stage into University of Virginia’s Scott Stadium this fall.

The band’s 360° Tour will make its only Virginia stop in Charlottesville at 7 p.m. Oct. 1 with Muse opening the night.

Tickets, on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, are $32, $57, $97 and $252 (plus service charges). Considering this is the first time U2 has enlisted a corporate sponsor, the band insists that 10 percent of every venue will offer tickets at the $32 level and general admission field tickets for $57.

Scott Stadium can accommodate about 61,000 for sporting events, but given the magnitude of U2’s rotating stage (which can be viewed at http://www.360.u2.com), capacity will be scaled back from that figure.

The U2 360° Tour is its first U.S. stadium tour since 1997’s mammoth PopMart outing and marks the band’s return to the stage after the 2005/2006 Vertigo road trip.

This 360° Tour follows the release of U2’s 12th studio album, “No Line on the Horizon,” and will launch June 30 in Barcelona.

Tickets for the Charlottesville show can be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets, http://www.ticketmaster.com, by calling (800) 745-3000 or at the Scott Stadium West Gate Ticket Booth only from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday and on the day of the show.

U2 to give tour proceeds to charity

From the Belfast telegraph:

U2 to give €9m of tour profits to charity

Rockers U2 will donate an estimated €9m of their summer tour profits to charity, it was revealed last night.

The artists will give away 100pc of their income from VIP auction ticket sales at up to 100 worldwide concerts.

Up to 600 stage-front tickets per gig are being sold off via auction, with minimum starting bids of between €95 and €1,015.

Every cent band members Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr earn from the sale of tickets in the 'Red Zone' will go to charity.

The charity-style partnership Global Fund, which helps fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, will benefit from a large donation.

Other good causes expected to receive payouts are charities focusing on Africa, the core of Bono's campaigning.

U2's precise cut of their concerts' gross takings is a closely guarded secret, but is thought to be upwards of 75pc. Promoter Live Nation also takes a cut, along with the venue.

A U2 spokeswoman said: "All of U2's income raised from the auction of Red Zone tickets will be donated to charity."

U2 Music Breaks a Netbook

Users find bizarre problem with Aspire One

Ben Rogerson, Fri 27 Mar 2009, 12:52 pm UTC
Acer Aspire One

If you're a U2 fan who owns an Aspire One, be careful.

Acer's Aspire One is one of the tidiest netbooks currently on the market, but if some of its users are to be believed, it has a rather unusual flaw.

According to Engadget, several owners of the 8.9-inch version of the machine have reported that if you play music through its built-in speakers at full volume, there's a very real possibility that you might damage the hard drive.

The glitch was discovered when an Aspire One owner tried to blast out U2's Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me, and is said to have been replicated since. Apparently, it only affects machines that contain a standard hard drive (rather than a SSD).

The word is that the problem is caused by excessive vibration and/or magnetic interference from the right speaker. I can result in errors and even data loss.

It's not clear whether playing any music at full blast should be avoided or if it's just U2 that the Aspire One doesn't like, but don't say you haven't been warned…

U2 sells out in Croatia

U2 concert in Croatia sold out in 12 hours
The Associated Press
Published: March 27, 2009

ZAGREB, Croatia: Tickets for U2's first-ever concert in Croatia sold out in 12 hours Friday, organizers said.

Hundreds of people waited outside stores overnight in freezing temperatures for a chance to buy tickets to the Aug. 11 event.

Thousands of others logged onto the authorized seller's Web site, overloading the server and causing it to go down for a few hours.

"We've never seen anything like that in our career," said Maja Valjak from the Lupa Promotion, a concert organizer for several years. She said organizers hoped to negotiate another concert in Zagreb.

The 63,000 tickets were priced at 250-2,000 kuna ($45-$356). They went on sale online at midnight and at 9 a.m. (0800 GMT) in stores. The concert was sold out at noon.

Ksenija Pavlic, a 36-year-old mother of two, managed to get tickets online at 4 a.m. — after four hours of trying. "I've been waiting for this all my life, and I wasn't ready to miss it!"

U2360 in Barcelona

Found this article on Jaunted.com:

----

While some music festivals are dying including Spain's popular Summercase, the U2 360 Tour will certainly bring out thousands of fans in Barcelona on June 30th.

The band will play at Nou Camp Stadium, home to the FC Barcelona football team, before continuing on its European leg of the tour which finishes at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on August 22. Then the US leg will kick off on September 12 at Chicago's Soldier Field with surprisingly affordable ticket prices, too.

Tickets for some tour dates are currently on presale today through Thursday but the presale for the Barcelona concert has ended. Similarly, a lot of other shows are already sold-out and random ticket sites have already begun offering tickets for exorbitant prices. Still, we bet U2 will release more tickets as the dates get closer.

If you're planning on seeing U2 in Barcelona, the Nou Camp stadium can be reached from the heart of Barcelona (about three miles away) via the Metro or Bus. And while Barcelona has plenty of cool hotels, we personally have to recommend the Hotel Omm situated along the city's swank Paseo de Gracia. Currently rooms are going for 240 Euros from June 29-July 1.

Meet The Claw: U2's Massive Stage

A friend of mine sent this to me, with the note that The Claw is 164 feet tall, and Soldier Field is 151 feet tall. This thing will rise above the rim of the stadium. That's pretty big.

My next question then, is what happens in a dome? Does U2 adjust the height? Do they skip enclosed stadiums all together? Most seats go right to the top, and if they lower The Claw, they'd risk the tarps on each corner blocking someone's view....

What do yo think?

NLOTH, track by track with Daniel Lanois

The following article came from the National Post in Canada:

U2's No Line On The Horizon: A track-by-track exclusive with producer/co-writer Daniel Lanois
Posted: March 10, 2009, 3:33 AM by Brad Frenette
Q&A, U2, No Line On The Horizon, Daniel Lanois, Behind The Scenes

Daniel Lanois and U2 have been working together for two decades. Along with Brian Eno, the Canadian-born Lanois has co-produced some of the band’s most lauded work, including Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby. For their 12th studio album, No Line on The Horizon, U2 invited Lanois and Eno to contribute as co-writers on several of the tracks.

Brad Frenette spoke to Lanois from his home/studio in Los Angeles for a chat about how he came to be involved on the new album and track-by-track assessment of No Line on the Horizon.

Q: How did you get involved with No Line On The Horizon?
A: We got involved after a phone call from Bono who suggested he wanted to invite Eno and myself to get involved in what he was hoping would become a futuristic spirituals record with a lot of lifeforce in it. In fact, he was not inviting us to produce the record but to compose the album with them. Eno and I accepted the invite and we met - we had a writing stint prior to going to Morocco. And then we went to Morocco and things went so well. There were talks about who was going to produce the record and I said "well, it's kind of producing itself, so lets just go with the people we have."
We did what we always did - we huddled and had a nice time jamming and bringing ideas to the table. Eno came in with some very fascinating rhythmic beginnings that Larry Mullen jumped right on top of and that became, essentially, the spine of the record.

Q: Were you cautious taking on the project, as it had been in the works prior, including a documented session with Rick Rubin?
A: I don't know exactly what happened with Rick. In fact they did some nice work with Rick on a Green Day project. And if I could read between the lines, and mind you I was not there, perhaps they were looking for fascinating spines to their work and they didn't want to have it be straight up meat and potatoes. They wanted a place for their innovative hats to go to and you never know how you are going to get those interesting beginnings. So we just huddled up, got on with it, and sure enough came up with them.

Q: Ok, well let's start with the album's title track, No Line on the Horizon.
A: Larry Mullen was – without anyone else playing – he was just trying out a few beats on the drums. And Brian Eno sampled him. Brian Eno's station was right next to Larry's - we have little stations in the studio. - so at any point Brian could record what Larry was doing, and manipulate it and sample it and so on. He did that, and it started out as a little Bo Diddley sample beat. Kind of jazzy, but it had a vibe to it. As soon as Eno sampled that, we jumped right on top of it and started playing over it, including Larry. And we came up with what I think is space age rock and roll - space age rockabilly. Bono had this idea - where the sea meets the sky and you can't tell the difference between the two. And the vocal happened very early on, that whole - a-whoawhoawhoawhoa! - that little hook. The vocal delivery, the vibe was there right from day one. I was very proud of Bono.

Q: Is that something that might not usually happen with the band?
A: He's great. There'll always be something there. Usually he'll fool you into thinking there is something there.

Q: Ok, let's talk about Magnificent.
A: That was born in Fez. We wanted to have something euphoric and Bono came up with that little melody. And he loved that melody, and stuck with it. Almost like a fanfare. And then I was involved in the lyrical process on that, because we wanted to talk about sacrifice that one makes for one's medium or one's art. I thought it had for a setting New York in the 50s; looking out a small bedroom window. Maybe a Charlie Parker kind of figure. That's what we started with. We placed ourselves in Charlie Parker's body.

Q: Tell me about another of your co-compositions, Moment of Surrender.
A: That was an ensemble composition. It had that great Eno/Mullen thing from the get go. A kind of rolling hand drum. And the original sketch had me in charge of the chorus. Bono would point to me: "Ok, Lanois, you sing the chorus" (sings the chorus' hook out loud). It's very much a Canadian sound there, a tribute to The Band. We call it the "Simcoe sound".

Q: How about Unknown Caller?
A: Similar to Moment of Surrender, early days. It had a great vibe to it. The guitar solo at the end was right from the backing track. There was no monkey business, it pretty much had its personality intact from day one. And a pretty great vocal from early, Unknown caller and Moment of surrender - they were there. Bono honed in on his lyrics but they did not go through any laborious process.

Q: The next track is I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight.
A: That started out as an Eno contribution. It was called Diorama.

Q: That's a very Eno-esque title.
A: Yeah. It always had a great vibe to it. In our absence, the U2 lads reworked the song and it became what you are hearing now.

Q: They took it away from Fez and redid it?
A: We have an open license to turn things upside down, keep one part from one, move it to another.

Q: Let's move on to the first single, Get On Your Boots.
A: Edge came up with that at home. That riff. He had a pretty solid demo of that. Some things were born - that "Let me in the sound" - that section came quite late. It was a little chant thing we all loved. Bono was batting lyrics around on that. It always had that great energy. Everyone worked real hard on that. I did my bit with that simple - it may seem simple - that little dub "love" - was compliments Danny Lanois.

Q: That "let me in the sound" bit - it reoccurs and that theme pops up a few times on the album. Was that idea meaningful to the sessions?
A: It was something Bono was toying with - that we are children of the sound. Having been at it for as long as he has, he realizes how special the gift is to be moved by music and that we live in the sound. That's what we resonate with and what we are as artisans and artist. A gratefulness and a realization.

Q: Let's talk about another rocker - Stand Up Comedy.
A: That song went through a lot of changes - that song was about six different songs. It's a study in itself - it would be a cool full length CD - just the the evolution of (Dance?) Stand Up Comedy.

Q: So it started out differently?
A: It was another song all together. A great song. But in the end it felt crafted - more craft than soul. And we like to make soul music. So we moved off the earlier versions and settled on that one.

Q: Getting back to Fez, that's the title of this next song: Fez – Being Born. It's quite lovely.
A: The Edge had a kind of symphonic guitar little moment that was free time. And I always liked the sound of it so I took that and chopped it into a tempo and presented that back to the band. I used one of Eno's beats and I kind of created an arrangement out of what was a free wheel but it always had a great sound. On the strength of that sonic I persisted with that piece. Bono thought that it had this feeling like it was almost something coming to life. Like a flower opening or coming into the world and then into the Being Born section. That's the high speed rhythmic part. We had a vibe very early on, so we married those two tracks together after the fact.

Q: As a producer did you hear a natural fit there, or were these two tracks written to be put together eventually?
A: No, I put them in the same key, anticipating that they might live together. I always look for outstanding transitions like that. They can't be taken for granted - they have to be designed and thought of scientifically. I love that triplet - it's something I created in my editing process, then the downbeat. Then the main song. I think it's a fantastic transitional moment.

Q: Tell me about another one of your co-compositions, White As Snow.
A: After my conversation with Bono about future hymns or future spirituals, I did a little studying. In fact, with a friend in Toronto, Lori Anna Reid - she's a great singer from Toronto and she's quite an expert on spirituals. I asked her to fish a few out for me and we had a listening session and that one stood out to me. It's an old church hymn called O Come, O Come Emmanuel. Its not identical, but it's inspired by that, an old public domain melody. I laid down a little piano version of that song, again, chopped it to a tempo. Then I came up with a vocal arrangement. Bono had this "white as snow" idea. It just slowly came together.

Q: Was it a challenge to take something old and familiar and give it a new context?
A: Yeah, we've not done much of this. The Edge wrote one called Van Diemen's Land, which was based on an Irish Classic called The River is Wide. So I guess it could be thought of that way. We like the idea of referencing a church great and bringing it into the future, It was an experiment.

Q: Ok, next track is Breathe.
A: That's another one that came from The Edge's corner. He had that pretty intact without our involvement. We worked on a version for a very long time which was great. But in the end they abandoned that and re-performed it. The Edge has got a little setup at home. We worked on everything collectively. Some things got a little more attention with Steve Lillywhite and the band . Breathe was one of them, as was Crazy.

Q: And the album concludes with Cedars of Lebanon.
A: Cedars of Lebanon is something that I took a special interest in. I built that arrangement through my editing process similar to Fez -Being Born. In the early '80s Eno and I worked with a great artist named Harold Budd. We made an ambient record called The Pearl. I always loved this particular track on The Pearl, so I based the mood of Cedars on kind of an excerpt from The Pearl. And then Larry Mullen came in with a killer drum part on that, I was really proud of him. I love the mood on that track; it's really thick with ambience. Almost like a direct throwback to the early 80s, to what I was doing with Eno. I'm proud of it, it's a nice revisit to that work. I didn't think I would ever push the ambient gas pedal any more, but there it is.

Q: What about the collaboration with Eno? Was it just a matter of stepping back into an old rhythm?
A: Part of who we are has never changed. We hook up, and in a matter of minutes we're playing, and somethings happening, and there's a vibe and it's great. So the playfulness in our relationship has never died. Eno is a great catalyst and instigator, I have the patience to investigate the details and arrangements in Brian's absence. He's a great man for giving you an opportunity to look at your work in another manner. That's really his gift to the workplace. He'll come up with something really fascinating.

Q: Larry was on an electric kit for these session, wasn't he?
A: For the beginning, yes. The thing about an acoustic kit is that really wears out the room because it's so loud. People get fatigued by the shock of a non-stop Mullen earthquake. We though lets use the electric kit and see what we come up with. It proved to be a great thing. Some of the things he came up with on that kit; he wouldn't have come up with on an acoustic kit. For example on No Line on the Horizon - that's an electric kit. As it is on Moment of Surrender. I don't know what he's going to do live.

Q: You spoke earlier about the idea of making "future spirituals". Was there a defined artistic thesis to prove on this album? And do you think you've achieved it?
A: We definitely wanted a fascinating and strange brew. We wanted to revisit the values of Acthung Baby. We wanted to build something that had never been heard before. And I think we succeeded at a few turns in the record and I'm very [proud of the rhythmic complexities. I'll use the foundation of Moment of Surrender as an example of something that is quite rare and unusual. In these fast times of reference, it's nice to break some new sonic ground.

U2 & Apple: No More?

Interesting article from CNBC.com about the business relationship between U2 and Apple....and how it's changed since the U2 iPod days.

Click Me to read the article.

Basically, it talks about Bono being a partner in Elevation Partners which owns 39 percent of PALM and rumors that with the launch of the tour, will come a new palm called the PRE. Blackberry is sponsoring the tour, so it'll be interesting.

U2 kicks off tour in Chicago

Click me

or read below...from the Chicago Tribune:

The summer tour season is dropping some big names on the Chicago calendar.

U2 is set to announce a Sept. 12 date at Soldier Field to open the U.S. leg of its world tour. And three of the six arena-level headliners Aug. 7-9 for Lollapalooza in Grant Park have been confirmed by multiple industry sources: Depeche Mode, the Beastie Boys and a reunited Jane's Addiction.

The U2 show "will be announced Monday," a spokesman for U2's Principal Management in Dublin said, confirming a Billboard report. Tickets will cost from $30 to $250, according to the report, and will go on sale later this month.

Following a run of five straight nights on "The Late Show with David Letterman" in New York, the Irish quartet moves to Chicago on Tuesday for a radio promotion event to hype the tour and its latest album, "No Line on the Horizon," expected to debut at No.1 on the Billboard chart that day. Does anybody self-promote better than U2?

The band won't be performing next week when it drops into town, but don't be surprised if you bump into Bono on Clark Street. And, yes, he wears his sunglasses at night.

U2360 Tour - Billboard Interview with Edge

Click here for an interview with Edge about the upcoming tour and the new album. Billboard is claiming the tour is called "Kiss The Future", but my sources keep confirming the tour is called U2360.

Either way, this appears on Billboard.com and is very in-depth.

U2360 Tour!

U2.com revealed the name of U2's upcoming tour...U2360

Based on comments in various articles, and some posted here...it appears to be an in-the-round show, and I am guessing that a U2 in-the-round show, will be more than just a circled stage on the 50 yard-line.

More details as I get them! March 9th is the official announcement, with locations, dates and times!

5:00pm EST UPDATE: I am hearing from a source that the cheapest seats will be $30 and be on the floor, with ten thousand guaranteed available at that rate for each show.  Other prices were $55 for the next level up.  Then $60-95....and up....but this is not official info, so take it as that.....

U2's sequel to NLOTH coming soon!

From Yahoo News:

U2 plan quick sequel to new album (Yahoo News)

U2 just released its first album since 2004 this week, but the Irish rock band is already planning a quickie follow-up for next year.

The new disc will be called "Songs of Ascent," and it will be more mellow than the current album, "No Line on the Horizon," singer Bono says in a cover story in the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine.

"We're making a kind of heartbreaker, a meditative, reflective piece of work, but not indulgent," the magazine quoted him as saying.

Bono likened the new project to jazz icon John Coltrane's 1964 tour de force "A Love Supreme" -- "which is to say, with that album, I almost take my shoes off to listen to it."

The first single will be called "Every Breaking Wave," a track pulled at the last minute from "No Line on the Horizon," U2's 12th album since 1980.

As with many of it previous recordings, "No Line" was a challenging project, with the quartet spending two years on scattered sessions in five countries with four producers.

"It is now easier and more affordable to record a song than at any other time in the history of recorded music," U2 bass player Adam Clayton told Rolling Stone. "Unless you're U2."

In proclaiming the importance of composing strong hit singles, Bono inadvertently took aim at a legendary rock 'n' roll forerunner by saying U2 has a meandering " Pink Floyd side" that "has to be balanced by fine songwriting."

But the first single, "Get On Your Boots," was roundly derided, and failed to make much of an impression on the charts.

U2 on Letterman, Night 2

It's no secret, especially to U2 die-hards, that U2 songs are kind of alive in that they evolve over time. Sunday Bloody Sunday is not the same as it was when it was born on War. As U2 evolves, so does the music that they bring with them from the past. A U2 album is nothing more than one moment captured in time, a representation of the birth of new music that will lay the groundwork for the live show.

It seems that NLOTH is already evolving. The songs are in infancy, but have already started to find their voice. Monday night's "Breathe" on Letterman was just a little bit changed already, and last night's rocking performance of Magnificent was the next step for that song.

Here's a youtube video from the boys on Letterman last night, performing, in my opinion, one of the best songs on the new album, Magnificent: (special thanks to the original poster, who also loaded night one onto youtube!)

This performance was full of energy...I can see this being the opening song on the live show....just full of energy. "I can feel that right in my chest", Letterman told Adam after the performance.....

U2 on Letterman, Night 1

U2 performed "Breathe" from NLOTH last night, with Bono adjusting a few lyrics to relate to the snowfall that NYC had experienced the night before.

It was an inspired performance that seemed to get stronger as the song went on. Here's a youtube video of the song...for high quality, be sure to click the tiny arrow on the bottom right of the player and choose HQ. It's a very good quality version!
