U2 Lighting
Seven of the fixtures – specially developed by Italian manufacturer Novalight for the tour and now in full production – are positioned around the stadiums in the audience bleachers, pointing back at the stage. Say’s PRG’s group asset director Paul Weaver, “They are an incredibly powerful effect, even contending with all the other lighting and LED screens, we’re really impressed with their effect”. He also reports that they are withstanding the rigours of touring extremely well.
The fixtures were sold to PRG, U2’s main lighting contractors, by Lightfactor Sales, Novalight’s exclusive UK distributor.
Ahead of the tour, Williams initially examined the original 1.2K Nova Flowers among other products, as he wanted a powerful ‘dominator’ style effect for specific sections of the show. He liked the build quality of the units, and the Nova Flowers also had the benefit of colour mixing and various effects, but he needed something brighter than the 1.2K unit for U2.
Novalight responded by producing the 2K version. These 8 units (7 plus a spare) are the first Nova-Flower 2Ks production units out of the factory in Viterbo….. and the first in the world to go on the road.
Weaver says they were confident of Novalight products being rugged enough for an arduous tour as PRG had previously used the High Ground sister product very successfully on Robbie Williams’ 2006 tour.
Lightfactor’s Peter Coles says, “Novalight are a very creative company and passionate about their work. They were extremely keen to accommodate Willie’s specific requirements, and it’s great to work with a manufacturer who has the attitude and flexibility to deliver solutions like this on demand”.
Nova-Flower is a unique product and ideal for numerous high-impact, dramatic lighting effects like back-lighting and silhouetting of performers. It is also the first fully programmable moving yoke ‘flower effect’ with DMX controllable pan, tilt, colour and shutter, plus other standard features. It has CMY type mixing, a rotating reflector (in both directions), pan/tilt and remote lamp re-strike.
For rapid rigging onto a truss, these Nova-Flowers have been supplied to PRG in the new two way flightcase. The units can also be used in stand alone mode programmed via the display buttons on its base. It has a weather-resistant IP 43 rating.
The U2 fixtures are being tech’d on the road by Andy Beller. The PRG “360″ account handlers are Robin Wain (UK & Europe) and Tim Murch (US) and the tour’s awesome “Claw” set was designed by Mark Fisher of Stufish.
U2 tour the US for 2 months from mid September.

U2 Will Spend 2 Million Dollars in Dallas
Found this on @U2. Click here to see it on the @U2 blog.
U2’s Next Brush with the NFL will be Spendy
U2 has performed at the Super Bowl … they’ve done a pro football-themed music video for “Stuck In A Moment You Can’t Get Out Of” … and now they’re apparently going to have another brush with the NFL at a cost of two million dollars. (Say that like Dr. Evil in the Austin Powers movies….)
See, the Dallas Cowboys just spent $1.2 billion (with a B) on a new stadium, and U2 will play there on October 12. One of the new gizmos in this football palace is the biggest HD video screen ever made. It’s 60 yards long (it runs from one 20-yard-line to the other) and takes up most of the interior of the stadium. Here’s a pic taken Friday night by Flickr user CamMan that shows how enormous this thing is:
It’s not only enormous, but it’s also intrusive. During the first pre-season game played in the stadium on Friday night, a punt hit the video screen (which is way too low). Have a look at the video to see how low the video screen hangs:
It doesn’t take a genius to look at that photo and then the video and realize that there ain’t no way U2’s claw is gonna fit in that stadium. NFL teams, understandably, want the video screen raised, but this TV news report says the Cowboys won’t raise it until right before the U2 concert.
Why? Because U2 has apparently promised to pay $2 million to have the job done so The Claw can fit inside.
Crazy, isn’t it?

Admit You Are Weak
I just ordered my copy of Bono and will get it in a few days. A couple hours later, I discovered this post on Bible Dog Man. For U2 fans who are spiritual and have faith in God, you might find it an interesting read and interpretation:
Admit You’re Weak!
August 25, 2009 Featured, Life Experience
I started reading ‘Bono’ the other day, and came across this really interesting part of the book. Early own Bono was very angry about having to rely on Edge, his guitarist and a very gifted one at that, to get the melody from his head onto paper. It was hard for Bono to admit he was weak in this area, and even harder to seek help. He goes on to say that our weaknesses can be great things. If we accept them we can use your weakness to grow closer to those around us. You see to overcome our weaknesses we must trust and empower people around us to be our strength where we are weak. This is true for our friends, coworkers, spouse, and God.
As a guy I struggle admitting my weaknesses. I either push them aside, not admitting them, or do my best to hide them. Growing up I always felt admitting my weaknesses was not part of being a man. The truth is quite the opposite. Admitting your weaknesses and inviting people into your life to provide reinforcement is the sign of not only a man, but a great leader.
Here are a few steps you can take this week to make your weaknesses a strength.
1. List your top 5 weaknesses, then ask those closes to you to give tell you what they see as your top 5 weaknesses. Use this time to discuss those areas with them.
2. List people in your life that provide strength to your weakness. If you don’t have anyone in an area who might be a possible candidate. Invite them into your life, and empower them to pour back into you.
3. Call out your weaknesses whenever they arise. This is a great exercise to help you identify when you try to hide your weaknesses. This will also acknowledge to those around you that you are not blind, because remember, they already know your weaknesses.
U2360 Wrap-Up from The Examiner

It’s official. The European leg of U2’s massive world tour, “U2 360”, has finished its galactic run. And what a run it was!
From Barcelona to Berlin, Dublin to London, and completing it in Cardiff, the band entertained their enchanted audiences with classics, new tracks, surprise tunes, and tributes to family, friends, as well as cities that played an important role in shaping their history as one of the biggest rock acts in music today.
Thursday night’s show in Sheffield saw “Stuck in a Moment” in the setlist, as well as “Walk On” and “Elevation”. Sheffield is also the birthplace of the man behind “The Claw”, show designer Willie Williams. Williams was serenaded by the crowd with “Happy Birthday” as his was that night.
Saturday night was the final show of the European leg and Cardiff was indeed a special place for this show. The Edge paid tribute to his Welsh parents with a Welsh dragon t-shirt and Bono acknowledged them for helping the band out in their early days. On my favorite song from the Slane Castle CD, “Out of Control”, Bono also did this, giving thanks to all of their parents.
“Bad” made its way onto the setlist, which is really great because it’s been absent for a while. “Mysterious Ways” creeped its way back in and also a personal favorite, “Stay (Faraway So Close)”, was performed as well.
Now that Europe is done and the band is resting up for their trip to Chicago on September 12th, I think we’ve all come up with opinions and suggestions about the tour, which is awesome because it’ll give us all something to ponder about before U2 hits North America.
After going through all of the setlists U2 came up with on this leg, I’m really curious if they are going to come up with something totally different for North America, or use this same template and add in different songs occasionally for each city. Here are my hopes for not just the New York/Raleigh shows I’m going to, but for this upcoming leg.
Keep “Breathe” as the opener, no doubt about that. Larry’s drum opening practically screams anticipation for the crowd to burst with excitement. Keep “Ultraviolet” as a part of the encore because after watching clips of it on YouTube, it’s perfect for a closing set because it’s gentle yet still leaves the crowd wanting more.
As far as new songs go, inject “Fez: Being Born” somewhere or another favorite of mine, “White As Snow”. Maybe even “Cedars of Lebanon” as part of the encore? And as for classic U2, “City of Blinding Lights”- I definitely would love to hear that live again. Hell, even “Love and Peace or Else” or “Miracle Drug” would be a pleasant surprise! “Electrical Storm”, “Stay”, and I’m HOPING, they pull “A Sort of Homecoming” out of the archives. Everyone- what’s your ultimate setlist?
Now that Europe is done, let the countdown begin. 20 days until North America!
Here’s “Bad” from the final show in Cardiff:

Ali vs. Stella - The Fight Is Over
Image by Getty Images via Daylife
From Bloomberg.com:
By James Lumley
Aug. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Nude Brands Ltd., a cosmetics company founded by the wife of U2’s Bono, Ali Hewson, lost a London court bid to block fashion designer Stella McCartney from introducing a new perfume this weekend.
Stella McCartney Ltd., a unit of L’Oreal SA, plans to begin selling the fragrance named “STELLANUDE” in the U.K. on Aug. 22, according to the judgment. Hewson’s Nude Brands has a European Union trademark on “nude” in capital letters and asked the London court for an order delaying sales of the perfume pending a full trial on trademark issues.
McCartney, daughter of Beatle Paul McCartney, has been designing clothing since 1995. Paris-based L’Oreal, the world’s largest cosmetics maker, bought PPR SA’s YSL Beaute unit last year and gained the exclusive right to negotiate an accord to make fragrances under the Stella McCartney brand.
While Nude Brands might “ultimately prevail at trial,” the “massive disruption” that would be done to L’Oreal’s business if the order was wrongly granted would outweigh the damage to Nude Brands by refusing to grant it, Justice Christopher Floyd said today.
Delaying the sale of the product would cost the company “many millions of pounds in lost investment,” a witness for Stella McCartney Ltd. said at a hearing earlier this week.
The deadline for canceling advertisements has passed and 26,000 bottles of the product were delivered to stores, according to the judgment.
‘Reluctant’
Courts are “more and more reluctant” to grant orders such as the one sought by Nude Brands, Kirsten Gilbert, a partner and trademark specialist at Marks & Clerk Solicitors LLP in London, said by telephone. “There is so much at stake.”
“This does not in any way say whether or not there was trademark infringement,” Gilbert said. “Bono’s wife now has the right to continue with her case in a full trial and if she can demonstrate that there’s been trademark infringement, she’s entitled to damages.”
A full trial will take place next year, Nude said in a statement on its Web site.
“Nude considers the launch of ‘Stella Nude’ by L’Oréal to be a clear infringement of Nude’s trademark,” the company said. “Nude was forced to take the matter to the English High Court.”
Fresh & Wild
The company was co-founded by Hewson and Bryan Meehan, the founder of a chain of U.K. organic-goods stores called “Fresh & Wild.” Irish rock-star Bono’s given name is Paul Hewson.
L’Oreal said in an e-mailed statement that it was “pleased with the decision of the High Court.” The company “will be proceeding with the launch of STELLANUDE as planned.”
The case is Nude Brands Ltd. v. Stella McCartney Ltd., 09- C02715, High Court of Justice, Chancery Division.

U2's Spider-Man Money Crunch

And we thought Bono was as rich as Oprah.
Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, the musical written by the U2 frontman and bandmate The Edge that's scheduled to hit Broadway in March, is allegedly having financial difficulties.
Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark features words and music written by Bono and The Edge and will be directed by Julie Tamor (who also directed the stage version of The Lion King). The show is expected to be one of the most elaborate musicals ever produced, but has been held up due to investment problems.
"The halt is attributed to cashflow obstacles that producers… are working to resolve," Variety reports.
Estimated costs for the production are between $30 and $45 million U.S. (about $33 and $49 million Canadian).
Those backing the musical maintain it is still set to open, Variety reports.
So far, no one has been cast in the production's title role. Evan Rachel Wood — Marilyn Manson's former girlfriend, who has a musical of his own in the works — has been chosen to play love interest Mary Jane Watson, and Scottish actor Alan Cumming will play The Green Goblin.
U2 will support this year's No Line On The Horizon in these cities:
Aug. 10 Zagreb, Croatia @ Maksimir Stadium
Aug. 14 London, England @ Wembley Stadium
Aug. 18 Glasgow, Scotland @ Hampden Park

The Edge defends U2360's carbon footprint
U2 Guitarist Defends Tour Against Charges Of Environmental Damage
LaunchDaily
8/18/2009
U2 guitarist The Edge defended the elaborate production on the band's current U2 360 tour against charges that it is having a negative impact on the environment. Environmental activist Helen Roberts claimed last month that to offset the trek's carbon footprint, U2 "would need to plant 20,118 trees." Talking to BBC 6 Music, The Edge responded, "I think anybody that's touring is going to have a carbon footprint. I think it's probably unfair to single out rock 'n' roll. There's many other things that are in the same category but as it happens we have a program to offset whatever carbon footprint we have."
The Edge added, "We're spending the money on our fans, I don't think there's a better thing you could spend it on."
U2 was slammed by Talking Heads frontman David Byrne last month, with Byrne saying about the production, "Those stadium shows may possibly be the most extravagant and expensive (production-wise) ever . . . It could be professional envy speaking here, but it sure looks like, well, overkill, and just a wee bit out of balance given all the starving people in Africa and all."
The entire tour, which encompasses 100 dates in 18 months, will see the Irish rockers travel 70,000 miles in their private jet alone. The band is utilizing a staff of 200 and the same number of trucks to cart around three copies of its massive, stadium-straddling stage set known as "The Claw."
According to the New York Times, U2 is buying carbon offsets to make up for the potential damage the tour is doing.

Ali vs. Stella

In one of the more bizarre celebrity feuds, fashion designer Stella McCartney and Bono’s wife Alison Hewson are engaged in a down and dirty fight over the word “nude.”
Hewson, 47, and her business partner Bryan Meehan, 40, founder of organic food chain Fresh And Wild are suing McCartney’s company over the use of the word nude in her new fragrance Stella Nude.
Unfortunately, Newson and Meehan also have a company called Nude Skincare which boasts model Helena Christensen among its devotees.
"Nude Skincare is suing for compensation, not with anything to do with the new scent but because of branding and the use of the word nude,” an insider told The UK Daily Mail newspaper.
“It would be quite funny if it weren’t being taken so seriously – there are other perfumes with similar names after all,” adds the insider.
But the nude theme is a large part of 37-year-old McCartney’s fashion brand and she has already created a collection of designs based on nude flesh tones which will feature models parading in them from head to toe.
A writ has already been issued but McCartney’s company is hoping to settle the matter out of court and with the new scent coming-out in September the bottle is a nude color to go with the theme.
The case will come before the Chancery Division in London which deals in infringement and copyright claims -- let’s hope Sir Paul and Bono can get around the peace table and thrash out a deal before then!

U2 Zagreb Review
U2 have conquered Zagreb, Croatia. Unprecedented and original spectacle in Maksimir stadium was thrown by Bono Vox and his good Irish lads of U2. Over 60,000 people sang along with the band for over two hours, including both older hits and songs from the latest album “No Line On The Horizon”.
- Oh beautiful, oh dear, oh sweet liberty – Bono Vox quoted Croatian author Ivan Gundulic to the delight of the sold-out stadium. He thanked everyone for hosting the group in the beautiful country of a thousand islands. So many emotions poured down at this point along the space stage and stadium into “Beautiful Day”.
Take a look at the attached photo gallery: U2 Hold Spectacle Of The Decade In Zagreb.
- This song means many things to many people and now I dedicate it to all of you who have had cold moments break your warm hearts – Bono said announcing “Beautiful Day”.
The singer greeted the audience with many Croatian words and made an effort, learning many words. At one point, the big screen on the stage displayed a souvenir in front of Bono – Zagreb`s Cathedral.
Watch the attached video of U2`s performance: U2 Hold Spectacle Of The Decade In Zagreb.
Proven humanitarian and musician, he could not miss the opportunity to remind his fans of the problems in Africa, Asia and all over the world.
The entire stadium sang “Happy Birthday” for guitar player Edge`s 48 th birthday, while after singing the verse for the second time, Bono opened a bottle of champagne and toasted to his friend (who was born on August 8).
Writer Miljenko Jergovic was in the crowd, watching the concert with his wife, singing and dancing, just like the whole stadium.
- This has to be experienced, heard and seen. A beautiful concert and excellent U2 – Miljenko Jergovic said.
Take a look at the attached photo gallery: U2 Thrill Zagreb`s Sold-Out Stadium.
After the concert, sounds of U2 resounded in the night, while fans continued soaking their throats with beer and singing the band`s greatest hits in many cafes near the stadium.
U2`s set list included: Breathe, No Line On The Horizon, Get On Your Boots, Magnificent, Beautiful Day, Elevation, One, Until The End Of The World, Stay (Faraway, So Close!), Unknown Caller, The Unforgettable Fire, City of Blinding Lights, Vertigo, I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Pride (In The Name Of Love), MLK, Walk On, Where the Streets Have No Name.
Three encore songs were Ultraviolet (Light My Way), With Or Without You and
