Thanks to @stybbe on twitter for this pic of his view at the show! You can see the bottom of The Claw and the stage in the distance, and in front of him is the "B-stage" if you will.

Apparantly the bridge between the stage and circle rotates? See below:

Monumentally Excitng
'Monumentally Exciting'

Wednesday, 10th June 2009. Barcelona. Production build.
We've been plugging away on this first build for the past couple of days and we're getting somewhere close to getting it more or less finished. One slight complication has been that tonight, right on the football pitch at the stadium, there's a Nike convention. Interesting. Apparently it was booked decades ago, so we have to work round it. It hasn't been too painful, other than our not yet having been able to build the mix position (the control tower at front of house) so we haven't been able to switch anything on yet.
Still, even in its dormant state what we have is monumentally exciting and, well, monumental. Most of the performance stage is now assembled and feels very comfortable. Standing centre stage and surveying the all-around vista of grandstand seats I couldn't help but think that if I was a rock star, I'd be deeply happy to be able to play to an audience this way. The video screen (yes, we're having one) is now complete and is a thing of exquisite beauty. Even the sound system is beautiful in a humungous sort of a way.
Work had to finish at 5pm to let the Nike people do their thing. This wasn't too much of a hardship as the crew have been working round the clock since we got here, so an evening off will do everyone the world of good. Actually, in a party town like Barcelona it'll probably do some of them a great deal of damage but they're grown-ups able to make their own decisions.
On departure from the stadium, Jake (our production manager) wondered if we should leave a huge 'Adidas' logo up on video screen for the evening. It was tempting, I confess.

Behind The Claw
--------
BRIAN BOYD
U2’s unearthly new tour set-up, consisting of The Claw and its revolving stage, makes its debut tonight at Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium – it promises to be a whole new live experience
IT LOOKS like a gigantic prop from a sci-fi film, costs about €100 million, is affectionately known as The Claw and all things going well will change the way we experience the live concert tour. When U2 begin their “360-degree” world tour tonight in the Barcelona’s Camp Nou, they will be taking not just a huge financial risk with their radical stage set-up but perhaps setting in train a new idea for stage configuration that will have many imitators in the future.
Speaking about the tour, Bono says The Claw was his idea – an engineering challenge he had been working on for the past seven years. “The Claw is all to do with how you can play outdoors without using a proscenium stage with a big bank of speakers on the left and right. Every outdoor stage show you’ve ever seen uses that configuration. This idea we’re now working on will mean more people can fit into the shows, there will be better sight lines and everyone will be closer to the action,” he says.
The proscenium arch set-up – putting a stage at one end of a stadium – has served rock shows just fine so far but what the tour promises is a new experience. The giant four-legged Claw will be plonked down in the middle of the venue – and in the middle there will be a revolving stage.
The first big surprise when you see The Claw is that there are no huge banks of speakers and miles of wires in view. All the technical hardware is hidden inside the four legs of the contraption, and at the very top there is a huge video screen, which will offer simultaneous footage of the concert. One of the odd aspects here is that audience members can all clearly see each other.
By not having a stage as such, this configuration means that about 20,000 extra seats per stadium have now become available – so if nothing else, U2 will break box-office records on this tour.
Some 50m high, weighing 390 tons and requiring 180 trucks to transport it from venue to venue, U2 have three different Claws at their disposal. While they are playing on one of them, the second one is being set up at another venue and the third one is being transported somewhere else.
Long-time U2 associates Willie Williams and Mark Fisher will be working as show directors for the 18-month tour. “Everyone who sees it says that it looks like something different,” says Williams. “It does look as though it has escaped from a giant space aquarium.”
The Claw was inspired by the four-legged Theme Building at Los Angeles airport. “Our work is all to do with the logistics of building a very large piece of technical infrastructure in a very short time, and to make something interesting out of it,” says Fisher. “Why do people go to shows like this in the digital age? It’s for the huge collective experience, the social and spatial, and memories. This set will contribute by creating a massive sense of anticipation and delivering an amazing kinetic performance.”
For all concerned, the best aspect of The Claw is that it can somehow create a feeling of intimacy in crowds of up to 90,000 people.
Bono says that U2 have always tried to present something different in the live context. The Zoo TV tour of 1991 was a spectacular, high-tech affair that had banks of giant video screens displaying imagery that corresponded with the music. Before Zoo TV, U2 live shows were a bit on the earnest side, but on that tour the band utilised images and slogans from pop culture to try and create a feeling of “sensory overload” for the audience.
The follow up-tour, 1997’s PopMart, was a kitschy take on the nature of consumerism, with huge McDonald’s-style “Golden Arches” on stage and a giant lemon from which the band members would emerge.
Subsequent tours have been more conventional but, with an experimental album on release, the band are now playing with technological fire once again. The dress rehearsals so far in Barcelona have suggested that this tour will be a very different concert experience, and an estimated 2.5 million people will get the chance to get up close and personal with The Claw over the coming year and a half. And they’ll all find that it’s really not as scary as it looks.

Saturday Night, Two Days To Go

There's only a couple of days to go now and last night the band arrived on stage late and went through the whole of the new show until... very late.
Our lips are sealed on what tracks they played - if you want to find out, it's not difficult, but if you don't want to we're not about to spoil the surprise. But here's a few clues.
Seems like the band are intent on really mixing things up on this tour. Following all those weeks of rehearsals in Dublin, they're sounding very tight musically and at Camp Nou they're focussed on the production - how to make themselves at home on a breathtaking new stage, how to be 360 for two and a half hours. They've rehearsed thirty-plus tracks and last night ran through more than two thirds - as well as a cracking selection from No Line, we counted songs from EIGHT different albums. Also noticed one or two familiar songs have been... reimagined.
Going to be at one of the first shows in Barcelona ? How you getting prepared ? What are you expecting ? Seen the band before - got any advice for people seeing them for the first time ?
Countdown two days....

The History of a U2 rehearsed song
U2gigs posted this very interesting article:
-------
The Unforgettable Fire Tour, September 1984 to July 1985
The Unforgettable Fire had a live career spanning 5 years, 4 months, and 4 days, beginning on 2 September 1984 and ending on 6 January 1990. Its September 1984 debut was at U2's second concert in Auckland, the last of four in New Zealand that kicked off the Unforgettable Fire Tour. Its setlist placement at that show was perhaps a little brave. The band kicked off the concert with the popular Out Of Control, then followed it with two more tracks from Boy - Twilight and An Cat Dubh/Into The Heart - before playing the then unreleased Unforgettable Fire. Only the lead single, Pride, was out was out at this point in time (which explains why the set is so light on Unforgettable Fire album tracks); the album was not due for release for another month. It was only later in the main set that the band got to popular tracks such as Sunday Bloody Sunday and New Year's Day.After New Zealand, U2 went to Australia, and out of ten gigs for which we have the full set, The Unforgettable Fire was played at nine of them. It typically occupied an early setlist spot the same or similar to that in Auckland, but on 14 September 1984 in Melbourne, it took the setlist spot after The Electric Co. that was then normally occupied by I Fall Down and would soon become home to A Sort Of Homecoming.
It was at the start of the European leg that The Unforgettable Fire was first paired with MLK. The duo were originally intended to be an atmospheric concert opener, and were used as such at the first European show of the tour on 18 October 1984 in Lyon. However, the exuberant crowd created such a din that MLK was barely audible and the experiment was not repeated. A combination of 11 O'clock Tick Tock and I Will Follow were instead installed as the opening punch, and at the next two shows, The Unforgettable Fire came third in the setlist without MLK as an intro. At the fourth show, MLK returned as an intro to The Unforgettable Fire, and at the fifth, the opening duo and MLK/The Unforgettable Fire were separated by the insertion of Wire as the third song.
MLK/The Unforgettable Fire quickly settled into this spot of fourth/fifth and occupied it for most of the rest of the Unforgettable Fire Tour. The band did toy with its placement, though. From 12 November 1984, Birmingham to 1 December 1984, Upper Darby, they played it later in the main set, after A Sort Of Homecoming (or in the case of the Birmingham show, I Fall Down, which had made a rare return to the slot from which A Sort Of Homecoming had displaced it). When MLK/The Unforgettable Fire returned to fourth/fifth, the song in third place became Seconds and Wire was moved to follow The Unforgettable Fire. This was unchanged at almost all of the 1985 shows of the tour. Only on a few occasions did U2 deviate; examples include rare Indian Summer Sky performances between Seconds and MLK/The Unforgettable Fire at two consecutive European shows (1st and 2nd), and Two Hearts Beat As One, sometimes preceeded by Surrender, between Seconds and MLK/The Unforgettable Fire at a small handful of North American concerts. After The Unforgettable Fire, Bono would often link it to Wire with a statement along the lines of "there are two sides to The Unforgettable Fire. This [i.e. Wire] is the other side; a song about a hypodermic needle".
The Joshua Tree Tour, April to December 1987
The Unforgettable Fire missed the opening show of the Joshua Tree Tour, but it returned to the setlist at the second show, 4 April 1987 in Tempe. Again, MLK functioned as its intro. At this Tempe concert, U2 revisited their idea of opening with MLK/The Unforgettable Fire, but this time used it to open the encore rather than the entire concert. This time, the experiment did not go quite so badly, as evidenced by the fact it was continued at the next four shows, but ultimately U2 gave up on the idea. At 12 April 1987, Las Vegas, the duo were moved back into the main set. In Las Vegas, they followed Running To Stand Still, but the next night in San Diego, they immediately followed the opening trio of Where The Streets Have No Name, I Will Follow, and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (a trio later augmented by the addition of Trip Through Your Wires after I Will Follow). For most of the remainder of the tour, MLK/The Unforgettable Fire remained a fixture after Still Haven't Found early in the main set, even if the opening couple of songs changed.
However, all was not static. At four shows on the Joshua Tree Tour's first leg, Pride was placed with its thematic partner MLK. The first time this happened, 22 April 1987 in Los Angeles, The Unforgettable Fire did not come along for the ride; the show opened with Stand By Me, followed by MLK acting as Pride's intro; The Unforgettable Fire did not show up until the middle of the main set, after Running To Stand Still. However, the other three times that MLK joined Pride at the start of the show (1st, 2nd, and 3rd), it was played afterwards and The Unforgettable Fire could come along for the ride.
Apart from missing the opening show, The Unforgettable Fire appeared at all gigs on the Joshua Tree Tour's first leg. It remained a staple on the second, appearing at all thirty concerts (a record Streets cannot claim!). However, it entered into a decline on the third leg. Out of 50 shows, it was played at 35. It was played at all September and October 1987 shows, but when U2 appeared in Saint Paul on 3 and 4 November 1987, The Unforgettable Fire was nowhere to be found, even though MLK was played. It was restored to the setlist in Denver on 7 November 1987, but struggled to hold onto its place - eleven more concerts followed in that month, with The Unforgettable Fire played at only five of them. It then made just one appearance in December out of eight concerts; its final Joshua Tree Tour performance was on 8 December 1987 in Atlanta. Even in these late stages, MLK/The Unforgettable Fire was played after Still Haven't Found, although occasionally Out Of Control or Gloria were inserted in between.
Lovetown Tour, September 1989 to January 1990
The Unforgettable Fire's decline continued on Lovetown. It was soundchecked before the opening concert, 21 September 1989 in Perth, but like the JT Tour, did not actually appear in the set until the second show, again in Perth on 22 September. The Lovetown Tour began with trios of concerts in Perth, Sydney, and Brisbane, and it was done at only one show of each trio - in Sydney, it was again done at the second show of the trio, while in Brisbane it was done at the first At all three of these shows, and indeed at every single Lovetown appearance, MLK functioned as its intro. Like on the Joshua Tree Tour, MLK/The Unforgettable Fire almost always followed Still Haven't Found. This was again in the main set, and usually but not every time in its early stages.
U2 then moved onto Melbourne for a stand of seven concerts, and The Unforgettable Fire appeared at three of them. At the third such appearance, on 14 October 1989, MLK/The Unforgettable Fire was separated from Still Haven't Found for the only time on the tour; All I Want Is You was played between them. After Melbourne, U2 were meant to play five shows in Sydney, but Bono's vocal problems caused three to be postponed; The Unforgettable Fire appeared in the set of one of the two shows played. Similarly, it was done at the first of two Adelaide shows.
U2 then crossed the Tasman Sea to play four shows in New Zealand, the country of The Unforgettable Fire's debut, but it was not included in any of the sets. However, when the band returned to Sydney to play the three postponed gigs, it appeared in the set of the first show of the trio, 17 November 1989. Six shows in Japan followed, of which The Unforgettable Fire featured in only two. Heading into the European leg of the tour, its days were quite clearly numbered.
The European leg was meant to have two shows in Paris, three in Dortmund, and three in Amsterdam before concluding with four in Dublin to celebrate Christmas and the New Year. The Unforgettable Fire appeared in the first shows in Paris, Dortmund, and Amsterdam - and then Bono's vocal problems returned. Bono's voice showed signs of strain during The Unforgettable Fire at the first Amsterdam show and he ultimately could not go on, with the show finishing prematurely. The subsequent two Amsterdam concerts were rescheduled as four shows in Rotterdam in January 1990 and Bono was ordered to rest for a week.
When the band returned to the stage on 26 December 1989, The Unforgettable Fire did not. Its return was the next night, the 27th; this was its sole appearance in Dublin and, at present, its penultimate live performance. Early in the new year, The Unforgettable Fire managed to just sneak out of the 1980s. Its 208th and last live appearance was at the second Rotterdam concert on 6 January 1990.
360° Tour, 2009: A resurrection?
Despite appearing on the Best Of 1980-1990, The Unforgettable Fire was not played on any of ZooTV, Popmart, Elevation, or Vertigo. It was considered in some context on Elevation in 2001 - the studio version was played as taped outro music when U2 performed at Slane Castle.
Now, however, the band are actively rehearsing it in Barcelona. It has been rehearsed on multiple days between Unknown Caller and City Of Blinding Lights, perhaps as part of a segment. Interestingly, at the 22 June 2009 rehearsal, the band multiple times soundchecked a segue from The Unforgettable Fire into Vertigo. This segue has not been repeated at subsequent rehearsals. Those of us who are fans of the song (myself included) can only hope that within a few days, regardless of what songs it is paired with, it will have returned to the setlist. After all, a rehearsal is no guarantee of a setlist spot.

Walk On

In 2009 U2 fans at every show will be reminding the world of the plight of Burma's democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi. A Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi has been described as Asia's Nelson Mandela. Her party, the National League for Democracy, won elections in 1990 but the ruling military junta refused to hand over power. Since that day most of her time has been spent under house arrest.
U2 believe the world must not be allowed to forget Aung San Suu Kyi and every night on the 360 Tour fans are being invited to wear the Mask when the band play Walk On, which was written for her.
Download your own Mask here - you will need adobe acrobat to print the file
Print it off.
Cut it out.
Attach some elastic or string to the sides.
Try it on for size.
(If you're really clever print it on card or laminate it
Or tape on a little handle to hold it in front of your face.
Wear it to work or college. Wear it on the bus or the train. Wear it in the pub or at the shops.
And don't forget.
Bring it to a U2 show.
Put it on with thousands of others when Larry and Edge strike up the opening bars of Walk On. Wear it to to show the world that you have not forgotten. 'Please use your liberty to promote ours' says Aung San Suu Kyi.
Use your liberty to promote hers. And the liberty of the people of Burma.
WEAR THE MASK.

U2 and Michael Jackson
Live U2 references to Michael Jackson: A Tribute
By now, undoubtedly most of you will have heard that Michael Jackson has passed away after suffering cardiac arrest at the age of 50. As soon as his death was confirmed, online setlist discussion immediately turned to speculation about whether U2 would pay tribute to Jackson at their forthcoming concerts through snippets or other commemoration. Bono has been known to tribute deceased famous musicians through song, such as Never Tear Us Apart snippetry after Michael Hutchence passed away and short performances of I Remember You in honour of Joey Ramone. If he does so, it won't be the first time he has acknowledged Jackson's life and music during U2 concerts. As our tribute to Jackson's contribution, let's have a look at those moments that happened during Jackson's lifetime.
It is known that Bono has snippeted two Michael Jackson songs in concert. The first was Billie Jean. Originally from 1982's Thriller album and released as a single at the start of 1983, it had taken the charts by storm by the time of its first recorded snippet at a U2 concert on 6 March 1983 in Portsmouth.
During this early period of U2's live history, Bono did not snippet nearly as often or as heavily as he does today. The Portsmouth snippet was in Surrender, the first snippet to be sung during that song. It was done fourteen more times on the War Tour - fairly routinely during the European leg, then more sporadically during the North American leg. It made just one appearance at a European festival in 1983, on the 2nd of July in Torhout. This was the last time it was snippeted on the War Tour, and all fifteen of these known snippets were during Surrender.
Billie Jean was snippeted once more a few years later, bringing its total known appearances to sixteen. On the War and Unforgettable Fire Tours, Surrender was often followed by Two Hearts Beat As One, and that is the song in which Billie Jean made its final appearance. On 27 December 1989, U2 played Two Hearts Beat As One for the only time since 29 April 1985, and at the end, Bono made reference to Billie Jean.
The second Jackson song Bono has snippeted is Rock With You, the second single from Jackson's break-through album Off The Wall. Released in 1979, Bono did not snippet it until 2001, and he only snippeted it once. It was included in a performance of Mysterious Ways in Chicago on 16 May 2001, along with a snippet of Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing.
As far as we presently know, this is the full extent of live U2 snippets of Michael Jackson's work. There are no known Jackson 5 snippets. Perhaps the most famous live reference to Jackson at a U2 concert was not even a snippet. It took place during the 28 August 1993 concert in Dublin, amidst the media furore over pedophilia allegations made against Jackson. At the start of Bad (undoubtedly intentional due to Jackson's popular song and album of the same name), Bono succinctly spoke his mind about the claims and the hype. He stated simply: "Michael Jackson, if you're out there, I don't believe you're bad. Guilty before you've been given a chance."
RIP Michael Jackson, 29 August 1958 - 25 June 2009.

Your U2 "skip-overs"
To quote him: "every album has one song you hit "skip." for me, it's Acrobat, Drowning Man, Stranger in a Strange Land, One Step Closer, Wild Honey, Some Days Are Better than Others, Fez... not that they are bad, just that they don't stand up to the rest of the album. Maybe they weren't finished (in my mind) and need a little more tinkering to make them great songs. Some of them are just too repetitive, like Stranger and Some Days."
This made me go back and think about any U2 songs I just sort of automatically skip without thinking, when they come up on my iPod. Not that I don't like them, I just find myself not often in the mood to listen to them.
I couldn't find one on every U2 album, but here are the songs I've skipped recently:
A Man And A Woman
The Refugee
Promenade
Love Rescue Me
Lemon
Wild Honey
What are yours?

In collaboration with Universal Music, DiGi is offering two lucky winners of its U2 360° Flyaway Contest and their partners a Dublin tour, which will take them to where the band members grew up, schooled, played their first gig and many more highlights.
The winners will then fly to London to watch U2 perform on a unique 360° stage designed to give the audience unobstructed views.
“This is a rare opportunity for our customers to see the iconic rock group live and take a memorable tour of where it all started for them. This flyaway contest is our way to engage our customers by making their music experience personal and memorable for them,” said DiGi youth segment head Nikki Lee.
The U2 360° Flyaway Contest is open to all DiGi customers until July 10.
To take part, customers need only download any U2 content of their latest album No Line On The Horizon from the DiGi music portal.
Every 10th downloader of U2 content will be in the running to be called by Fly FM, beginning now, any time between 4pm and midnight, from Mondays to Fridays.
The contestants will have to sing the word “magnificent” for as long as they can in a single breath.
Magnificent is U2’s latest single from No Line On The Horizon.
The top two contestants who can do so for the longest time will win the contest. The other contestants will receive exclusive U2 merchandise.
DiGi customers can purchase U2’s latest album at RM9.90, full tracks at RM5 each or truetones at RM4 each from DiGi Music in order to participate in the contest.

U2 cover band live at Red Rocks
Under a Blood Red Sky — The U2 Tribute band — induced 9,000 U2 fans to sing “With or Without You” at the top of their lungs at Red Rocks.
“To get to be the only U2 tribute to ever recreate their original concert up there was an amazing honor,” said vocalist Billy “Bono” Bunting.
Under a Blood Red Sky puts together new set lists from famous U2 tours — complete with replicated wardrobes and video that portrays the years of the legendary band's career.
“We defiantly take an extreme attention to detail regarding our reproduction of famous U2 concerts,” he said. “The diehard U2 fans in Colorado continue to come see us again and again because we care to make sure that it is as authentic as we can make it. We are a ‘tribute band,' not a ‘cover band,' as there is a difference.”
Bunting played with drummer Jerry “Larry” Bousquet and bass player Todd “Adam” Brown for more than 10 years as XLulu, an original band that toured with Bad Company and Ted Nugent. But Bunting started thinking more and more of forming a U2 tribute band.
The first concert Bunting ever saw was U2's “The War Tour” in 1981. Though he grew up in Guilford, Conn., he immediately ran out and bought the video “U2 Live at Red Rocks” and immersed himself in the music, which led him to fantasize about playing at Red Rocks.
“Twenty-five years later I created Under A Blood Red Sky as a way to honor the band that inspired me to be a singer,” he said.
The Denver-based band is the most authentic U2 tribute this side of Dublin. In addition to playing to a sold-out crowd at Red Rocks, the band has toured The House of Blues in Hollywood, Anaheim, San Diego, Chicago and more, commemorating the 25th anniversary of U2.
“Everything we do sound-wise is down to the letter as far as equipment goes — in building the guitar rig, effects and guitars themselves,” he said. “Jerry's drum set and set up are exact. Bottom line is that I wouldn't touch doing a project like this unless we nailed it. I mean, these are my heroes too, so I wouldn't do Under a Blood Red Sky unless I think we do it justice. Nine thousand fans at Red Rocks thought we did — so that's good enough for me.”

Thanks, as per usual, to the good people of Spanish fansite U2Eastlink for their updates.
Also, in an interesting twist, U2.com's countdown videos have been previously pretty uninformative, but today's (day eight) shows Larry playing, of all songs, Electrical Storm on glockenspiel. The band have never played this song live before.
